Robert Norman Ross was an American painter, art instructor, and television host. He was best known as the creator and host of the instructional television program 'The Joy of Painting,' which aired from 1983 to 1994 on PBS in the United States and similar channels worldwide. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, Ross was raised in Orlando. As a teenager, he cared for injured animals and dropped out of high school in the 9th grade. After losing part of his left index finger while working as a carpenter, Ross developed a unique style of holding the paintbrush, using his remaining fingers. He gained posthumous popularity through the internet, where his show continues to inspire aspiring artists.
