Darryl Matthews McDaniels, better known as DMC, is an American rapper and a founding member of the hip hop group Run-DMC. Born on May 31, 1964, in Hollis, Queens, McDaniels was placed in foster care by his unwed mother and eventually adopted by the McDaniels, who raised him in a Catholic household. He attended Rice High School in Manhattan and St. John's University in Queens. McDaniels developed an interest in hip hop after listening to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. In 1978, he taught himself to DJ and adopted the stage name "Grandmaster Get High". DMC's contributions to hip hop culture have solidified his place as one of its pioneers.
