James Pickens Jr. (born October 26, 1954) is an American actor best known for his starring role as Dr. Richard Webber on the ABC medical drama television series Grey's Anatomy. He has also had notable supporting roles such as Deputy Director Alvin Kersh on later seasons of The X-Files and Chuck Mitchell on Roseanne and The Conners. Pickens was born in Cleveland, Ohio and started acting while attending Bowling Green State University. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from BGSU in 1976. Pickens began his professional acting career at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City and has since appeared in numerous theater productions as well.
